my version of the cliche braamies shot // #braamies #braamfontein #umbrella (at Lamunu Restaurant & Bar)

Gentrification, urban renewal. Call it what you want. It has it’s pro’s and cons. But, as with everything in this life, there is a cost-benefit matrix that society has to consider. The gentrification of Braamfontein has forced many of its previous inhabitants (residents, businesses, hawkers, criminals (thank goodness they’re gone) etc, to look for a new place to call home and to establish their roots. On the flip-side, new kinds of business, new people with fresh ideas rooted in a modern and eclectic society have converged on this place that’s full of potential and have laid the groundwork for the emergence of a new downtown Johannesburg. This didn’t happen by chance obviously. Changes in government legislation (tax laws, education reforms, city by-laws) created the incentives and disincentive that have led to the emergence of New Braam. The long-term success in this experiment of social and cultural engineering will provide much data for research to support further urban renewal project across South Africa’s ageing major inner cities.

Jozi from the sky || How’s this for a different perspective on your city? #Johannesburg #SouthAfrica #Jozi #VodaWalk

Love this perspective of Johannesburg’s skyline. Much nicer than the stock standard view with Carlton Centre in the background shot from the Braamfontein direction
